BASEBALL STORIES - Shut Out

15 comments:

  1. What I found surprising about the story "The Shutout" was that the Baseball Hall of Fame hated the skin color of the Black Negro League players so much, that the Hall of Fame didn't induct any of the Negro League players into the Hall of Fame.

  2. what i found surprising was that soilders at valley forge were batting balls and running bases in their freetime. i found it crazy because at valley forge it was very cold and a lot of soilders didnt have nice clothes. Also lots of the soilders got sick and or had frostbite and now im wondering how they got frostbite.:)

  3. What i found surprising about "The Shutout" was that barely any records were kept about the negro leagues. I knew that the whites wanted to keep African-American from playing baseball and then the African-Americans formed their own league, but i would have thought that people would have still kept records.

  4. What i found surprising was they never kept records of the negro leagues and that the ones that they did keep are really hard to find.

  6. What I found surprising about "The Shutout" was that at Valley Forge soldiers played an older form of baseball in their free time. That surprises me because the temperatures at Valley Forge were extremely cold but the soldiers played anyways!

  7. What I found surprising about "The Shutout" was that slave owners let their slaves play sports. It surprised me because I didn't think slave owners let then participate in any thing like that.

  9. the thing I found surprising about "The Shutout" was that national baseball leagues turned down African Americans, because the essay said that they were popular due to their talent. I would have thought that if Negros were that good, the teams would want them no matter their skin colour.

  12. What I found surprising was even though the black players might have been amazing baseball players, the White Hall of Fame didn't recognize them for it. I though the fact that the white press portrayed the black players as clowns surprising, too. I mean, that is just plain rude! It is one thing if you aren't very fond of that type of person, but it is another to ignore and mistreat them just for their color of skin!

  13. I thought that it was unfair because blacks were mistreated because of there skin color. Some of the best baseball players of all time are black but never played in the Majors because they didn't have the opportunity. If white people gave them a chance I think there would be a major difference in the hall of fame and in the minds of baseball fans everywhere.

  14. What surprised me about the shutout was the way the white people treated the black players on the field and off the field. Black players did not like the whites throwing things at them or insulting them. Even though the black players wanted to do all of the bad things the white players did to them back, because they knew that they had better character and one day blacks would be able to play the game ...................
